Technology is steadily involving and to think that it won’t affect the healthcare industry is an understatement. While many are looking to utilize phone apps to better reach patients, they should also be looking at how to use remote monitoring devices effectively as well. With wearable technology, patients vitals are going to be monitored in real time, their lifestyle will improve, and healthcare will be more accessible.

Patients are going to be able to conduct routine tests on their time and send the results to their doctor right away. This will save the patient time by allowing them to complete the checkups at home without needing to wait at a doctors office. They will no longer have to wait for open office hours or have to miss work to schedule an appointment. This will also help those who have disabilities that make traveling difficult. Instead of needing to worry about who will take them to the clinic they can safely perform routine tests at home.

You cannot ignore the fact that you can also complete doctor visits in your home as long as you have a laptop and an internet connection. More insurances are allowing individuals to do online medical exams in the comfort of their home. They will be able to do a video call with a doctor that can also prescribe medication should they need it.

When a patient wears a remote monitoring device, they will become proactive concerning their health. For example, when users use Fitbit, they tend to get up and walk around more because the device is reminding them to walk around every hour. The same will be said for wearable technology that can monitor their health. When the patient begins to see their health diminish they can take appropriate action to resolve the issue that is appearing.

Another benefit of remote monitoring devices is that it makes health care more affordable for users. If they can’t afford to see a doctor, they will be able to do a consultation over their device. This will help facilities be less crowded and more able to help series cases. The devices will also help improve their quality of life, especially those that need chronic disease management. Instead of having to stay at the hospital patients will be able to stay with their families and still monitor their health. Those that need constant monitoring will be able to easily track their state of health.

With all of these great benefits, we do have to be aware of a significant downside that comes with it. The devices are going to require constant connectivity and a good one at that. This can be hard to have in rural areas, or areas with inconsistent broadband. Not only that, but not everyone owns a smartphone, so while the monitoring devices can be critical for elderly patients to use, it does not mean that they will understand how to use them.

In order to understand the full benefits of the devices, we have to ensure that we can deal with the problem that comes with it as well. Ideally, as our healthcare advances, we are going to want to utilize remote monitoring devices more, especially for patients that require continuous attention.
